Job Title: Instructional Assistant 
Reports to: Principal / Teacher Assigned

Primary Purpose:
Provide instructional assistance to students under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher. Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities.


Qualifications:


Education/Certification:

High School diploma or GED

Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Associate’s degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment through the Region XII Service Center (Title 1 only)

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
Ability to work well with children
Ability to communicate effectively


Experience:
Some experience working with children


Major Responsibilities and Duties:


Instructional Support
1. Provide instruction to students under the direction of assigned teacher or assigned program; work with individual students or small groups.
2. Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
3. Assist teacher in implementing instructional strategies and concepts to address student needs.
4. Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
5. Help maintain neat and orderly instructional environment.
6. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment and supplies
7. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
8. Provide assistance to substitute teachers.


Student Management
9. Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom or designated areas. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
10. Keep teacher/supervisor aware of special needs or problems of individual students.


Clerical Support
11. Compile, maintain, and file reports, requisitions, records and other documents according to standard procedures.

 

Other
12. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
13. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
14. Uphold and enforce state and local policies of the school.
15. Maintain confidentiality.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping
Motion: Moderate walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move books and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside and outside; exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
